June 2014 Birchbox Review

My June 2014 Birchbox arrived today – here’s what was inside:

(I got box #42 – how do you tell?  Log in to birchbox and scroll down to the box history, click the link and the last one or two digits (https://www.birchbox.com/shop/birchbox-1/june-2014/june-2014-bb42) are the box number – you can see all of the other boxes by changing this number!)

 BBJune14 002

BBJune14 004

$10/Month with month-by-month

or $9.17/Month with annual subscription ($110 – one month free!)

 BBJune14 010

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner – 0.03 oz – $12

I really don’t have a use for this – will end up swapping.  Much prefer my all natural eyeliner.

Antica Farmacista Bath & Shower Wash – 1.5 fl oz? (not marked) – $3.75

I’m sure I’ll use this, but again, wish it was from their ingredient friendly line…

Perlier Body Cream – 1 fl oz – $4.25

*sigh* another item that isn’t “ingredient” friendly.  and I love lotion.  so conflicted….

COOLA Tinted Matte SPF 30 for Face – 0.17 fl oz – $3.60

Ah – finally a product that nods toward natural!  I’ve actually tried COOLA before and loved it – so this sample is happily received!

 BBJune14 009

nyakio™ Kenyan Coffee Face Polish – 0.07 oz – $0.70

A coffee face polish sounds like it might be a nice wake you up in the morning!  This is made with Kenyan coffee and natural oils!

nyakio™ Kenyan Coffee Body Scrub – 0.25 oz – $1.31

And a coffee body scrub!  I’m going to be bouncing off the walls – LOL!  This formula is loaded with natural ingredients like shea butter, sugar, jojoba seed oil, avocado oil, and, of course, Kenyan coffee beans!

nyakio™ Hydrating Face Oil With Kola Nut – 0.07 oz – $3.43

Husband actually received a face oil in one of his previous boxes that he loves – so I will probably end up giving this to him to enjoy!

I estimate the value of my June 2014 Birchbox at approximately $29!  I do wish that more of the items followed their product conscious items like last month.  Have to say the value is way up there though!

What did you get in your June 2014 Birchbox?

June 2014 Birchbox Man Review

Husband’s June 2014 Birchbox Man arrived last week Saturday (a mere day after they posted shipping for it!), but just getting to the review now!

(Husband got box 24 this month – how do you tell?  Log in to birchbox and scroll down to the box history, click the link and the last one or two digits (https://www.birchbox.com/men/box/june-2014/june-2014-bb24) are the box number – you can see all of the other boxes by changing this number!)

Men’s Subscription ($20/Month):  Grooming products and accessories ranging from socks to tech accessories

Overview of his box from Birchbox:

English Laundry Tahitian Waters – 2 ml – $1.70

Mmm – this smells amazing!  I really like all the different cologne samples Husband receives in his boxes!

Baxter of California Facial Scrub – 0.5 fl oz – $2.13

I’m sure this’ll get use – not much else to say about it though!

Billy Jealousy Beard Wash – 1 oz – $2.50

I’m not sure why Husband got another “beard” item in his box – I’m fairly certain that he filled out the online profile that said he did NOT have a beard, so not sure why we got this item.  Will likely end up being swapped.

Tommy John Loafer Liners – 2 pack – $16.50

Husband doesn’t have loafers, but he does have a pair of Sanuk shoes that these will probably work with?  This is the item that we could have picked either the socks, a card holder, or “surprise me”.  Husband chose the surprise me option, but I think he wishes it would have been an item different from the two offered!

Proper Bar Soap – 1 oz – $2.40

Hm – we have a LOT of soap in this house.  I kind of went on a crazy the past couple years at farmers markets purchasing handmade soaps… LOL  This will actually probably end up getting donated with all of the other “hotel” samples.

*Side note on this, whenever we stay at a hotel, we take all of the shampoos/soap bars/etc. and then donate them to a food shelf once a year.  It doesn’t cost us anything (the cost is built into the rate of the room right?) and it’s a “free” extra donation to someone in need.  We stole this idea from a coworker of Husbands, and have to say it’s awesome.  Last year it was a solid Target bag FULL of samples on top of our other donations!

The overall value of Husband’s June 2014 Birchbox Man was approximately $25 for his $20 subscription.  I think this is probably his least favorite box yet, but we’ll just mark this one as a miss and hope next month’s is better!

Birchbox Order Recap!

I normally don’t publish my Birchbox orders – but almost had to with this one!  What’d I get?

The Goods:

BBandJSMorders 001

Eco – Armour Shave with Benefits  – 5 oz – $18.95

This is the most I’ve ever “paid” for shaving foam – but that being said, used it tonight and loved it!

Karma Naturals Nail Polish Remover – 4 oz – $12

OOO!  Gave this a try too and seems to work great (only used on one nail)!  Can’t wait to give this the full test with a nice bright red or something! 🙂

Eshu Pre-Shave Oil – 1.7 oz – $15

Will have to get review from Husband and report back later on this item

And the extras..

Davines Oi Shampoo – 12 ml – $1.11

Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel – 2.5 ml/0.085 fl oz – $6.68

The Cost:

I received approximately $53 worth of product and paid (are you ready?) $6.76!  🙂  I received the extras for free (order over $35), used offer “WELCOMEOFFER20” for 20% off, and used 300 rewards points ($30)!  I LOVE Birchbox‘s rewards program!  I wish some other boxes would step up and take notice!!

I think that’s about the best we’ve done so far for Birchbox purchases!  And I’m super excited for my two new items!

PLUS, I scored 3 samples for purchasing over $25 AND a deluxe sunscreen sample with code “protect”!  Unfortunately this box has already sold out, but I’m SOO happy that I was able to snag one before that happened!  My skin will thank me 🙂

Juniperseed Mercantile – this was one of the brands featured in the Eco Emi Spring Cleaning Special Edition box – once I went to the website, I knew I had to place an order!  And right now they have free shipping on orders over $50!  What’s coming my way?

– Unpaper Towels – I ordered the half dozen size to see if we could commit to using reusable towels instead of paper towels or napkins.  If these are a hit, we’ll be back for more!

– Washable Damp or Dry Mop pads to replace my swiffer sweepers!  Hardwood floors + dogs = lots of fur!  I’m hoping these are a viable replacement!

– Ecofriendly Furniture Dusting Spray – because, why not?  I actually ordered two of these!  HA!

– Mineral Unscented Sunscreen – more sunscreen you ask?  Well, yeah, I have very fair complexion and after a strict warning from my dermatologist, I can’t get enough sunscreen!

– Soothe Your Sniffer Peppermint and Eucalyptus Shea Butter – to help with stuffy and runny noses.  Allergy season is here – so thought I’d give this a try too!

Will post the full review once these products arrive!

Limited Edition: Free for All

Birchbox Order – So I’ve been hemming and hawing over whether or not to purchase the “Free for All” Limited Edition box from Birchbox – and decided that the only two products in the box that I couldn’t live without were the Karma Organic Spa Nail Polish Remover with Soybean Oil and Tea Tree Oil and eco-armour Shave with Benefits Shave Foam with Mint + Eucalyptus, so just decided to place an order for these two items (Full Size of course)!  I spent $31 (prior to any discounts) for these two versus the $44 for the entire box that only contained sample sizes of these.  I’d consider that a win (although I will miss not having the tea! – received these in a swap and they are amazing!)  Husband also picked up some eshu pre-shave oil ($15) and of course we got the free sample pack on orders over $35.  The best part? With coupon code “welcomeoffer20” and my birchbox rewards points, the total order was like $6.  I love rewards programs 🙂

SubBoxSat 024

And lastly – although it’s something I already received – I have to wax on about Octavia Tea again.  I love this stuff.  Seriously love.  I thought that I liked Keurig tea until my mom got me hooked on this stuff.  It’s sooo yummy!!!  I’m enjoying the Tropical Ambrosia now 🙂

May 2014 Birchbox Review

My May 2014 Birchbox was part of my Subscription Box Saturday!  Here’s what was inside:

(I got box #34 – how do you tell?  Log in to birchbox and scroll down to the box history, click the link and the last one or two digits (https://www.birchbox.com/shop/birchbox-1/may-2015/may-2014-bb34) are the box number – you can see all of the other boxes by changing this number!)

$10/Month with month-by-month

or $9.17/Month with annual subscription ($110 – one month free!)

SubBoxSat 005

No. 4 Volumizing Shampoo – 1 oz – $4.12

No. 4 Volumizing Conditioner – 0.25 oz – $1.06

Alright – why for the love of Pete would you send a 1 oz shampoo and a 0.25 oz conditioner?!  Am I the only person in the world that seems to burn through conditioner way faster then shampoo?? If anything, it should have been the other way around!  Sheesh…

That rant being over – I’m always up for new shampoo/conditioner samples!  The No. 4 brand is vegan, gluten free, sulfate & sodium chloride free, and paraben free also!

Whish Shave Cream – 0.75 fl oz – $2.93

The Whish brand is paraben, sulfate, DEA, TEA, and Petrochemical free!  I received a lotion sample awhile back and loved it – so super excited to give this a try!  Shave Cream is one of those products that I haven’t found “the one” yet in natural products.  I do like EOS shave cream – but seem to go through the bottle WAY too fast (and it’s impossible to get the last 1/4 out without some serious strategy!)  Maybe if they did a redesign?

SubBoxSat 007

CoTZ Face Mineral Sunscreen – 2 g – $0.94

This product claims to be “free of harsh chemicals, oils, and fragrances” but doesn’t really give a breakout of what it does or does not contain.  Nevertheless I will still use this in the summertime!  I can never get enough sunscreen (my skin hates the sun – LOL!)

Smarty Pants Gummies – 2 gummies – $0.33

haha yeah – these are already gone.  I have a weakness for gummies – and they are good for me?  Yes, please!  I know better then to buy a bottle of these though – I’d probably eat them like candy…

LAQA & Co Sheer Lip Lube Pencil in Menatour (purple) – 0.07 oz (FULL SIZE)! – $18

WOW!  I can’t believe the value of this item.  I like quadruple checked the website versus the product though – and yep, appears to be legit!  That being said – me + purple = no good, so will end up swapping this, but what a great added value to the box!

I estimate the value of my May 2014 Birchbox at approximately $27!!  Way to hit it out of the park Birchbox!  I was a little disappointed after last month’s box – but LOVE this one!  Especially since the products seem to be lending more towards paraben and sulfate free!  Granted the highest value item isn’t quite for me, but that’s not their fault!  So glad I held onto this subscription! 🙂

What did you get in your May 2014 Birchbox?

Changes Changes Changes!

Well – it’s that time again to mix things up with my subscription boxes!

The Old

Let’s kick things off with the Summer 2014 FabFitFun VIP Spoiler – here it is:

SummerFabFitFun Spoiler

Sonya Dakar Flash Facial – RV $95

Yeah, let’s just say I’m not impressed.  Over half the box value on an item I won’t use (I’m not a huge mask fan)… I decided to cancel.  I had been on the fence anyway after the Spring box, as I just want more natural products in my life.  Although the FabFitFun VIP box always has SUPER value – and I have found some awesome products through them, I just couldn’t get on the bandwagon for this spoiler.  I had told myself if I didn’t like the spoiler I was cancelling – so I did 🙂

SO… what do you ask replaced my FabFitFun VIP box??  Drum roll please….

The NEW!

I decided to sign up for Wantable Intimates!  I LOVE clothing boxes, and decided it was time to clean up my sleepwear!  Read more about Wantable Intimates here!

The Ugly:

Alright – one more change happened recently – Little Black Bag is no more 😦  They re-released their site as Pose, which I’ve been stalking daily to see what is posted; and I’m STILL not sure what’s going on.  It appears that it’s more of a “marketplace” (i.e., you can post/trade your own personal items??) but it appears that all the photos are still professional?  I’m so confused right now.  Beyond that if I look at the FAQs it appears that there are some “behind the scene” costs on top of the list prices (you only get 80% of the price of an item you list, and if you trade an item you listed you get charged 20% of that item too! – UGH!)

Let’s just say that I would never visit this site again if I didn’t have a credit… I WISH I would have  known how horrible the new site would have been and used my credit on the old site… *sigh*.  I may just let it go unless I see something that I just have to have.  I do like that they now have clothing on the site… but I DEFINITELY liked the format before better…  goodbye Little Black Bag, you will be missed 😥

If anyone has some positive experience with Pose, let me know…

April 2014 Birchbox Review

My April 2014 Birchbox arrived today – here’s what was inside:

(I got box #48 – how do you tell?  Log in to birchbox and scroll down to the box history, click the link and the last one or two digits (https://www.birchbox.com/shop/birchbox-1/april-2014/april-2014-bb48) are the box number – you can see all of the other boxes by changing this number!)

or $9.17/Month with annual subscription ($110 – one month free!)

Use code SFBB100 to get 100 addition points ($10) with an upgrade to the annual subscription!

BBApr14 006

Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner in Jamun (Deep Purple) – 0.024 oz – $4.40

Not a purple person (this is the SECOND purple eyeliner I got this month – what the heck?!) so will be adding this liner to the trade pile.

Color Club Nailpolish in Breakfast at… – 7 ml – $3.25

Oohh!  LOVE this color!!  HUGE win in my book!

Gilchrist & Soames Spa Therapy Body Wash – 1.35 fl oz – $2.53

Birchbox seems to really like this brand (got a lotion last month).  Fortunately, I liked the scent of this body wash better then the lotion – although both are very mildly scented (my guess is to appeal to the masses!)

BBApr14 009

KIND Snacks – Maple Pumpkin Seed Bar – 1 bar – $0.79

Maple Pumpkin what?!  haha.. quite the interesting flavor.  To be honest, it doesn’t sound that appetizing, but eventually I’ll try it!

Miss Jessie’s Transitioner’s Magic – 1 fl oz – $2.75

Alright, still not sure what “transitioner’s magic” is – but it says to apply to damp hair and style as usual?  LOL guess I’ll give it a shot, not sure what it’ll do!  ha!

I estimate the value of my April 2014 Birchbox at approximately $13…  I think this is one of the lowest value Birchbox’s yet?  Thankfully, I’m usually pretty impressed with my boxes, so not tempted to cancel this one at this time!  Hopefully next month’s will be amazing 🙂
